The Day My Body Gave Out in a Grocery Store

💔 A Moment I’ll Never Forget. Right before I went into hospice, I could feel my body getting weaker every day. Still, I tried to keep doing the normal things like a quick trip to the store with my adult son.

That’s when it happened. I bent down to grab something off the bottom shelf… and I couldn’t stand back up.

At first, I thought maybe I had just crouched too long, but it wasn’t that. My legs felt like concrete blocks, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t push myself up. My arms were shaky, my chest felt heavy, and I had no strength, no energy, no “gumpf” left in me. My body had completely given out.

I sat there stuck and embarrassed, while people walked by and my son had to crouch down and lift me off the floor. It was humiliating, but also terrifying, because this wasn’t just being tired. It was one of my first signs that hospice was around the corner.

👉 Why this happens: With heart valve disease, the heart can’t pump blood the way it should. That means your body doesn’t get enough oxygen, fluid builds up in your legs, and even small movements like standing up can feel impossible. It’s your body running out of power.

💬 Have you had a moment like this where your illness showed up in everyday life and knocked you flat?

Tell it here. Your words could be the lifeline another patient is looking for.
