Proof that healing is possible, even when the journey takes longer than expected. Rachelle’s story reminds us that second chances are worth the wait.

First off, my name is Rachelle, and I'm thrilled to share my journey with you. Originally from Colorado, I now call Oregon home, and I'm grateful for the fresh start. I've always been passionate about exploring the mountains, and the views are simply breathtaking. However, it was during these adventures that I first noticed something was amiss. Despite breathing, I couldn't seem to catch my breath, and I wondered if I was developing asthma.

A series of tests ensued, and when I was diagnosed with tricuspid regurgitation, I was taken aback. “What is that?” I asked, and my doctor explained it in a way that helped me understand that my heart wasn't functioning properly.

I was put on oxygen 24/7, which wasn't exactly exciting. Having a constant companion—aka the oxygen tank—wasn’t fun, but I was determined to make the best of it. When I learned that living at a lower altitude might allow me to ditch the oxygen, I was hopeful. After flying to Oregon, I was thrilled to discover that I could breathe easier. “Yahoo!” indeed!

So, I made the move to Oregon, but packing up my life wasn't easy, especially when every day felt like a struggle to stay alive. It took months, but I persevered, and finally, I was settled in my new home. I quickly established a relationship with my new cardiologist, and we worked together to manage my condition.

She told me that I was a very sick girl, but I was determined to stay positive and focus on the good things in life. When my cardiologist mentioned the possibility of a new valve without open-heart surgery, I was ecstatic. “Sign me up!” I exclaimed. But little did I know that the journey ahead would be long and arduous.

The battery of tests that followed was exhausting, but I refused to give up. And then, the wait began. Weeks turned into months, and I finally received the call I had been waiting for. Unfortunately, it wasn't the news I had hoped for—I wasn’t a good candidate for the study.

I was disappointed, but I didn’t let it discourage me. My doctor told me that I could either see a surgeon or wait for another study to come along. It was a tough decision, but I decided to wait.

And then, it happened again—two more times, to be exact. But I refused to give up. It took over a year, but finally, I was accepted into the study.

The day of the procedure arrived, and I was nervous but hopeful. Two days in the hospital, and I was on my way to recovery. As I woke up in my new room, I knew that something was different. Before even sitting up, I could sense that I was better. And when I took my first steps, I was overwhelmed with emotion.

Walking became my rehabilitation, and it brought me immense joy. Strolling on the beach, feeling the sand between my toes, and breathing in the salty air was exhilarating. I realized that no matter what challenges we face, we should never give up. As long as our hearts are still beating, there's hope for a better tomorrow. And with the support of loved ones, we can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.

So, don't give up—keep pushing forward, and know that a brighter future awaits.
