From side effects to strength training — Louis is proof that progress is possible.

Louis is almost finished with his last month on Venetoclax, the oral medication he’s been taking for cancer. We’ve been on this journey for a while, and it’s hard to believe we’re finally reaching this point. He’s got a CT scan and lab work scheduled soon, followed by a visit with his new oncologist.

We were honestly heartbroken when his original doctor, Dr. Saleh, left. She was more than just a good doctor—she truly cared and took time to see Louis, not just his chart. We miss her, but we’re adjusting. This next visit will be his second time meeting with the new oncologist, and so far, things are going okay.

Now for the good stuff—Louis is doing amazing. This second round of cancer has been easier on him than the first. He’s got more energy, his strength is coming back, and he’s sleeping better too. Most mornings, he wakes up feeling refreshed and ready to go. We go to the gym three times a week together, and on the other days, we get in a walk. He even mows both our front and back yards —and they’re big!

His stamina has really improved. A few months ago, even the idea of all this activity would’ve been too much. But now, he’s keeping up with life—and with me!🥳

He’s also been traveling with me for my advocacy work, which means a lot. Even while managing his own health, he still supports me as my care partner. He makes sure I rest, helps with the behind-the-scenes stuff, and keeps me steady when things get overwhelming as they sometimes do. We’ve always been each other’s care partner, and this season has reminded me how strong that bond really is.

And for a little humor—when Louis first started treatment, his appetite was out of control. I used to joke that he was eating us out of house and home! He couldn’t seem to get satisfied no matter how much he ate! Thankfully, things have settled down now, and he’s back to his usual eating habits (and we no longer need to grocery shop every other day).🤣

So that’s where we are. Louis is stronger, more active, and feeling more like himself again. We’re taking things one step at a time, but right now, we’re just thankful for how far he’s come.

This road hasn’t been easy, but we’re still showing up. If you’ve walked a hard road too, share it below. We’re listening.
